If you’re heading out for a drive to Wisemans Ferry, or checking out the farm gate produce on the Old Northern Road, I have found you the perfect meeting point, Wolfe and Co.. Wolfe and Co. appeared on the scene in Dural in 2015, and has made a splash. On a Saturday morning by 11am there’s already a line of hungry diners out the front forming to take in the good coffee and sumptuous looking dishes rolling out the front door.
As the months roll by, there is cause for celebration as slowly, quality cafes are springing up in the Hills area of north western Sydney. Tuckshop, just down the road in Glenhaven, fills to the brim most days and, Youeni in Castle Hill is doing great things too. Now Wolfe and Co. is well established in Dural which is great news!
The vibe is relaxed with most of the seating on the outside. Families tucking into food after Saturday sport, couples who are re-energising after athletic endeavours, and even a few who are smartly attired taking their seat on the leather-clad bench seats inside.
The menu is conventional, yet has creative twists to pique your curiosity – a fruit salad titled Pineapple Caramel, or Creme Brulee French Toast or Panzanella with locally sourced Willowbrae Chevre. Since it’s rapidly approaching lunch, we opt for the Smoked Trout Salad and the eponymous named burger Wolfe and Co. burger.
As the food is being prepared, my cappuccino arrives. The first sips yield robust coffee flavours from a Five Senses blend, with an initial bite that quickly fades away into the background with a sweet finish, creamy textures, and a decent temperature. The cup is beautifully presented and a regular size ensures that the coffee packs a punch.
The menu listing for the Smoked Trout Salad was enticing and won me over, but then it’s presented at the table and it’s a visual treat . There’s generous scalloped pieces of trout, large radicchio, pretty yellow edible flowers and carmelised walnuts. I can’t resist tasting the trout first and of course its as good as it looks, and tastes even better. The smoking of the trout is exquisite, and does not mask the the flavour of the fish, yet it is ever present. Nicely camouflaged within the radicchio is a salsa verde that complements the fish. Caramelised walnuts is a refined touch, not only are they crunchy, they are sweet and offset the sharpness of the radish. There’s a ton of freshness to the dish and I thought it was fun to utilise the huge radicchio leaves by putting the ingredients, rolling it up and eating it as a small roll!
A hamburger is usually about the eating, and are challenging to be made to look good, but Wolfe and Co. serves one of the best looking burgers in Sydney. A beautiful round, shiny milk bun, a thick well-defined patty, with just the right amount of melted cheese spilling over the sides of the patty. The lettuce and tomato add colour yet are wedged in nicely to give height to the burger. I challenge you to find me a better presented burger! The patty is cooked to perfection, almost charred on the outside with a little pink in the middle. The meat comes apart nicely too. There’s a little bite from the pickle and mustard, crunch from the lettuce, sweetness from the ketchup and richness from the cheese. If that doesn’t fill you up the moreish shoestring fries will. They are crispy and the dipping sauce has a nice bit of heat to it too.
We are glad that there’s Wolfe and Co. in Dural. There’s enough menu options for you to keep coming back and that’s definitely what we will be doing. If you do find yourself in north western Sydney or even at Castle Towers and wanting to escape the mall type food outlets, just head 10 minutes up Old Northern Road and you will be in for a great feed!
