In Short : Lords of Pour delivers coffees at a standard that could easily have queues forming in Sydney. It’s an eclectically fitted out cafe yet so warm and welcoming. From flat whites to filter coffee, rustic food offerings and delicious pastry, this little cafe in Ettalong covers all bases.
One of the best aspects of living in the big cities on the east coast of Australia is the opportunity to find cool little towns within a 90 minute drive from the CBD. In Melbourne there’s the Mornington Peninsular where we found great coffee and food at Flower Girls & Co. In Sydney a 90 minute drive will have you seated and sipping outstanding coffee at Lords of Pour.
It wasn’t pure luck that had us picking out Lords of Pour at Ettalong Beach for coffee and breakfast. A conversation just over 18 months ago with Mister Eats stuck in my mind when I asked for central coast recommendations. Coupled with the fact that we were heading to the Avoca Beachside Markets, it was prime time that checked out Lords of Pour. What surprised me is that on a Sunday morning at 8:30, the place was already quite packed with locals as well as visitors like us, which usually a promising sign that we had picked a good café that is endorsed by the masses, as well.
Stepping into the café, what stood out for me is its dramatic grunge deco, with black walls and red flower graffiti art on the wall, a bird cage on the white tiled communal table with an animal head skeleton inside it and the ceiling art at the back of the café, with plastic model hands hanging down from the ceiling and fingers placed in different artistic poses. It adds to the overall mystique of the venue and it almost dares you to come in and appreciate the café for what it is.
After finally settling in, we realised that we were famished and coffee deprived after our early wake up and could not wait to check out Lord of Pour’s drinks and food menu.
Here at Lords of Pour, they take their coffee very seriously. In fact, when barista Tyler saw us taking photos of the coffee, he came over to point out to us that the design of the coffee art on the flat white was actually a kookaburra. Poor Coco and Viner Sacha had a rather sheepish look as he had not seen the design and had the kookburra’s bottom lined with up the lens. Outstanding latte art is one thing, but Lords of Pour excel with the depth and body of their milk coffee. I loved every last drop. Beautiful textures, the milk was warm and comforting and the coffee had the right acidic kick to power me through the morning.
We loved Lord of Pour’s version of a Granola Bowl. It features almond and pistachio granola with natural yogurt, and seasonal fruit. The granola bowl was beautifully presented with apple slices, mandarin orange wedges, banana slices, and half a passion fruit. And that was just the fresh fruits! There is also the almond and pistachio granola with almonds and pomegranate seeds providing dashes of its red brilliance, with a dollop of yogurt on the side and slivers of dried coconut. Beautiful presentation aside this bowl also delivered in flavours. The granola bowl flavours were fresh, naturally sweet, creamy and harmonious all at once with every spoonful. This is one breakfast that was delicious and you actually feel good eating it, making it a great way to start the day.
If you feel like something decadent, you should try Lords of Pour’s Egg Tart. The tart pastry is buttery, and short while the filling is eggy and creamy with the right amount of sweetness and spices. The flavours were rustic and tasted like how you would make it at home. One secret tip that I discovered is that I stole some passion fruit from Coco and Viner Sacha’s granola bowl and ate it together with a spoonful of the egg tart. The passion fruit totally elevated the egg tart to the next level. It’s like the sweet tart flavours of the passion fruit has awaken the taste buds and the egg tart celebrated in the awakening. I would definitely recommend trying this tip if you happen to order these 2 items from Lords of Pour.
Our visit was all to brief but we left in the knowledge that we had found our go-to cafe for guaranteed great coffee. We can’t to come back to try a filter coffee and to sample more food on their menu.
