In Short: Flower Girls & Co. in Mornington is one of those little gems you’re lucky enough to stumble upon when exploring the quaint seaside communities of the Victorian coastline. Cosy atmosphere amongst vibrant floral bouquets, and great coffee and treats. Who could ask for a better way to while away the day in Mornington?
The Victorian coastline is dotted with gems of welcoming communities to explore that would easily keep me pleasantly occupied for years. It’s one of my favourite places in Australia, and the world for that matter. What was unexpected, at first, was the amazing array of top notch cafes, restaurants, and artisanal food. So, rolling into the town of Mornington to find Flower Girls & Co., one of the cutest cafes we’ve found on the Mornington Peninsula, became one of the highlights of a recent foodie expedition.
Flower Girls & Co. brims with quaint, floral cosiness, as we dodge the rain drops of the main street on this typical grey Melbourne kind of day and head for this caffeinated oasis. The café has pride of place in the middle of the Mornington hustle and bustle, but offers a calming respite with warm wood, fresh whites, and nooks, all amongst a pallet of vibrant flowers.
We’re just in for a warming drink and a few treats while the rain does it’s work outside, so we start off with a fitting cup of vanilla chai. I like a distinctive chai, and this one has a nice spice that plays well off the generous vanilla notes. It’s a smooth and creamy blend that goes so well with the stormy backdrop from our open window seating. The perfect vantage point to sip and survey the stormy street life.
So, those treats I mentioned… first up is the light and fluffy lemon meringue. Like a cloud on a plate, the meringue is wispy, creamy, silky, and subtly sweet. Popping this puff with deft spoonwork reveals a tart and tangy base that mingles perfectly with the pillowy whiteness. The moment on the tongue is equal parts pucker and poof.
With a cabinet of goodies just crying out to be freed, how could we not liberate the apple nougat pomme tart. A dome of glazed almond slivers encases a divine centre of cinnamon spiced apple and nougat atop a buttery shortbread base. Just look at the image! I mean, if there’s a reason that they say a picture is worth a thousand words, this is it. The golden shell of almonds, the crumble of the base… you had me at nougat!
