In short: The Colonel’s Son sits along Melbourne’s glorious shoreline mingles influences of Asia with the very best of Melbourne café favourites. Nestled in the quaint village of Black Rock, it offers views, brilliant brew, and that local café feel that is oh so inviting. Tip: The Colonel’s Breakfast is a worthy contender in any ranking of top notch full English breakfasts.
Having recently moved to Melbourne and living along the coast road that encircles Port Phillip Bay, one of our most loved pastimes is following that ribbon of road in search of quaint beachside villages that are home to so many great cafes. On one of those beachy forays we coasted into the bustling hamlet of Black Rock in search of caffeine and brekkie bounty.
As is our usual routine when scoping out a new café enclave, we consult a range of trusted sources for rating and recommendations. We’re looking for consistent contenders across all these foodie guideposts, and it’s not long before one sticks out in the form of The Colonel’s Son.
The bright and airy two-story café takes pride of place along the Black Rock beachside strip. Headed up by its owner and chef Ankit Mehra, The Colonel’s Son mingles touches of Asian influence with the best of Melbourne’s café culture.
With that caffeine lust looming strong, we take a seat right up front, bathed by the crisp seaside light pouring through the floor to ceiling windows. Soon after, a much await mug of magnificent mocha magic makes its appearance. Sipping from the bright and cheery cup, the brew if just punchy enough to hold its own with the chocolatey overtones.
With a heaping helping of coffee from the mocha, Sonia lines up a cheeky chai to chase the chill of a Melbourne spring day far away.
Fingering the menu, my digit stops suddenly on the selection du jour. Being a huge fan of the full English brekkie, I spy what appears to be The Colonel’s Son’s incarnation of this café classic. The Colonel’s Breakfast brims with all the elements that work so well together to leave its enjoyer satisfyingly in a food coma. Pork and fennel chipolatas intermingle with golden hash browns, smoky bacon, creamy avo, haloumi, eggs, and a bundle of sautéed mushrooms.
While I work my way through the mountain of the Colonel’s Breakfast, Sonia takes on a stack of delights in the Sweet Potato and Parmesan Waffles. Layered and lathered in hollandaise, the tower of pulled pork, poached eggs, charred broccolini, avocado mousse, and apple slaw rivals my big brekkie in every measure of taste and tantalising presentation.
Find yourself a reason to ride, drive, or jog your way along the beautiful Melbourne shoreline, not only for the pure picturesque experience, but also for the enjoyment of exploring the endless café encrusted coastline. While it’s always more fun to wander with no particular destination in mind, we’d recommend making an exception and place a big red push pin into the map right on The Colonel’s Son in Black Rock.
