In Short: New Star Kebab is a rockstar of Auburn. Of course, you can assume they do stellar kebabs and shish plates, but it’s the pizzas and pides which will delight. Rock up in the evening and look for the neon lights, or be lured in by the aromas during the day, either way you will leave well fed and satisfied.
If you wanted to know how to survive in the restaurant and hospitality industry for a quarter of a century, look no further than to New Star Kebab in Auburn. Personally, I have been going to New Star for over a decade. The formula on the surface looks simple, but look a little deeper though and unpack the tremendous amount of preparation that must take place to keep customers coming back and importantly fed speedily. The aromas draws you in and this Turkish eatery sits alongside two other kebab stores to give Auburn’s main street a distinct charcoal, meaty perfume.
The Coco and Vine team, along with lovely Lisa from Weekendfoodescapes and her husband sampled a variety of delicious offerings at New Star. I have chosen my superstars at New Star.
I had my eyes and mouth set on the Sucuklu Pide, and handily, it was placed right in front of me. I loved the golden brown crust, yet it is all in the eating, it was just sublime. Melted cheese on the pide combined with Turkish sausage and egg, it just does not get much better. In my all visits, this was the first time I had it, and boy am I glad I have found this variety of pide. It will definitely have me sneaking a trip to Auburn just for sucuklu alone!
Continuing with the pide theme was a Lahmacun Pide. This one is all about the minced meat with a nice herbaceous kick from the parsley. It’s a lighter and thinner than the sucuklu, and yet just so easy to eat.
If the pide was the supporting cast, the main act would have to be the Shish meats served on skewers. A mixed Shish Plate is the perfect choice, if this is your first foray into the meat offerings at New Star kebab. Take for example the lamb shish, it was cooked to perfection. Tender and filled with a smoky, spiced flavour. Chicken is cooked to perfection with a charred outer, giving way to still moist, flavoured centre. A plate of accompaniments including red cabbage and tomato freshens the palate.
While at New Star Kebab they can make your HSP(halal snack pack) dreams can come true. Check out this plate of goodness. Shaved shards of meat with stacks of chips and sauces including garlic and chili sauce. It is a little naughty, but as I always say, life’s too short to be not enjoying a HSP once in a while!
If you thought that pizzas are the domains of the Italians and Americans, think again. At New Star Kebab, their Chicken Pizza is absolutely first class. Let me see, where do I start? The base? Well it’s perfectly cooked through, yet still pliable. Biting into it, I really enjoyed the spring texture. Combined with the cheese and chicken it definitely had me nodding with approval. A generous spread of olives, green capsicum, and mushrooms deliver both texture and a heap of flavour.
We literally rolled out of New Star Kebab, but we did so with a smile. Its main street location means you can burn off some of those calories by taking in the cluster of ethnically themed stores with food, spices, and other unique offerings, that you would not encounter, say if you had just had lunch on Crown Street in Surry Hills for example.
