In Short: Green Moustache’s elevated location will delight with its garden-like oasis. It’s the perfect destination for a casual lunch, dinner, or business get together with your team or clients. Friday drinks would be an absolute blast here too with Green Moustache’s signature cocktails and a plate of the Chilli salt school of prawns.
North Sydney’s re-invigoration continues unabated with new apartments and skyscrapers springing up. To cater to the growing population of people and influx of new employees, a host of new cafés and eateries have popped up. Owners Andrew Utiger and Matt Erby already have a few eateries under their belt, and they have chosen North Sydney to showcase Green Moustache as one of their latest food ventures together. Green Moustache joins the likes of Hunter Gatherer to provide all day dining options and also the opportunity to stay into the evening for dinner and cocktails!
To get to the restaurant, you will have to take a lift from the ground floor entrance of the building which will also give you an opportunity to quickly peruse the menu if you have not already done so online.
When the lift door swings open on the 10th floor bar level, you feel like you are transported to an oasis, with lots of indoor foliage scattered all around and hanging from the ceiling of the restaurant which is designed by resident horticulturalist Erin Martin, famous for his work at another beautiful eatery, The Grounds of Alexandria. In fact, throughout my meal, I almost felt like I was dining in an outdoor garden without being at the mercy of the weather, making for a comfortable relaxed dining environment. The place is outfitted with classy, yet casual and comfortable, furniture and lots of friendly staff on hand to ensure that you have a great dining experience here.
You can choose to dine at the table or high stool table nearer to the bar. The place might not look spacious initially but there are a number of dining chambers segregated by walls, all interconnected so that you are within the line of sight of the staff. On days when the weather is good, there is even an outdoor seating area option that overlooks the busy Pacific Highway.
Green Moustache has a good mix of food options, from small plates entrees, large plate mains, and bites on the side. The stand out from their small plates is definitely their Chili Salt School Prawns. The small whole prawn is coated in light crispy batter and deep fried until golden brown, then seasoned with salt, cut red chili, and green onions. When the dish was served, the aromas from the prawns and green onions was so enticing! As much as you want to dive into this dish immediately, we recommend a quick squeeze of lemon as a touch of acidity helps cut through the oily flavours. Biting into the prawn, all you can hear is the crunch followed by a flood of flavour explosions in your mouth. To bring the dish to the next level, try dipping the prawn in the Siracha chili aioli. The spicy, creamy sauce complements the crispiness of the prawns and is super addictive. It may seem like a lot at first, but before you know it, the whole plate is polished off and you’re ready for your mains.
For a light main, we recommend the Cold Smoked Trout Salad, with baby beets, wild rocket, walnuts, crispy pancetta, and parmesan. The wild rocket and sliced baby beet makes this a super healthy lunch, while the crispy pancetta and walnut gives it a crunch factor. But the real highlight of this salad is the cold smoked trout which was smoky, rich and delicious. This is one lunch item that you can safely indulge in and be guaranteed that you will not go back to work in a food coma.
For a moreish and substantial main, I could not go past the Crispy Skin Confit Duck Leg. For those of you who don’t already know, I love my duck dishes and when I saw confit duck leg, that was the only item in the menu that I knew I absolutely had to try. The creamy leek and fennel puree provides a nice contrast from the rich duck flavours, while the orange, pomegranate and macadamia nut salad provide an acidic flavour contrast and extra crunch element. An accomplished dish by the chefs at Green Moustache!
Green Moustache has extensive opening hours and reservations can be made from their website which is highly recommended as they can get pretty crowded, especially on a Friday afternoon. With its convenient location, ample seating, laid back funky environment and upbeat music, it is fast becoming the place where young business professionals come in for a special lunch treat for themselves, their teams with a client.
