In Short: Originals Burger Co. in Sydney’s Brookvale combines the best of the burger culture from around the world, with unique and innovative flavour creations, from experienced chef Josh Franco. The outstandingly friendly and welcoming team make you feel right at home as you slurp, slop, and smile your way through some of the country’s best burgers, wings, and fries. Definitely a burger lovers must do!
Unless you’ve deleted your Instagram account, permanently signed out of your Facebook feed, and not left the house in the past few years, you’ll be well aware that a burger renaissance is underway. Renaissance actually doesn’t describe this new era for the humble patty and buns, this is more a revolution. It’s a re-awakening of all that’s so simple and delicious in a burger, and then adding a few slices of hip with a generous side of culinary craftsmanship. That magical mix has made its way to Sydney’s north shore, in the form of Originals Burger Co.
I love it when talented and grounded food artisans take their creations to the people, real people, where they live and work. Originals Burger Co. have done just that and set up shop smack dab in the humming industrial hub of Brookvale. The creation of three friends that hail from Sydney’s polar opposites of Manly and Bondi, Originals Burger Co. is captained at the grill by the experienced Chef Josh Franco. It’s honest food with flare, served to honestly hard-working people. Bad-ass burgers and fully loaded fries couldn’t have found a better home and it’s pretty obvious that the locals agree. Not to mention, Originals also serves a mean flat white to boot! Burgers and coffee, who knew?!
The real point of a good burger joint, aside from amazing burgers of course, is that it’s all about a relaxed and friendly food experience. You want to feel like you’re welcome when you tuck into these marvelously messy mountains of meat. And welcomed we were, as the super friendly Originals crew of Oakley, Harry, Brendan, and Dan, give us the inside story on the menu and let us watch the magic happen in the kitchen. This is no bland, soul-less, global food chain, assembly line, it’s a place of creation where burger professionals put care and passion into every bite.
Speaking of bites, our first one is into one of Originals’ monthly special guest burgers. This month it’s a succulent seductive feast called “Tha PORK SLAP!”. There’s a reason for the exclamation mark in the name, this spicy number turns up the heat just enough so that there’s no way the taste buds are falling asleep anytime soon. Smoked apple and bacon mayo, roast pork neck, bacon, BBQ sauce, onion, slaw, American mustard, American cheese, hot sauce, and pickles all pile on to make a masterpiece of monumental proportions. Did I also mention that it’s probably wise to leave your fancy duds at home? These delicious towers of decadence also have a habit of finding their way onto your fingers, face, nose, and yes, your shirt, if you’re not a seasoned burger eating boffin. Not to worry, there’s a sink for tidying up before heading back out to the office. No, really! There’s a sink for diners to clean off all that ooey gooey goodness. Mind you, I could have used a shower!
You can’t say burger without saying fries, loaded fries that is. Take a heaping pile of super crunch fries, smother them in cheese, gravy, and Originals special recipe dressing, and top that all off with bacon bits and shallots, and well, enough said… am I right?
A chaser of wings with that burger and fries? Why not?! Especially with wings this good! I’ve covered a lot of highways and byways throughout America’s many burger belts. From Airstream diners on Route 66 to hipster hideaways on Manhattan’s lower East Side, if there’s a good burger to be had, there’s likely a basket of wings swooping in right behind. The Originals Burger Co. does the burger and wings tradition proud with BBQ Maple Wings and Hot Wing choices. As I’m getting tasting backup from fellow Coco & Viner Sonia, who’s a bit of a shrinking violet when it comes to the spicy stuff, we take the BBQ Maple route and we’re not disappointed. Fall off the bone, free range wings, slathered in Originals sauce and spice are subtly sweet and glisten in all their glory.
OK, so this is Sydney, and we all know Sydney would not function without that constant intravenous drip of the black brew. Case in point, we can’t even have a burger without a shot of the good stuff. Good thing too, as this smooth, rich, creamy cappuccino is the perfect topper to the burger feast.
Never shy to put a topper on that great coffee topper, our amazing host, Oakley, twists our arms with a divine Cherry Slice.
Originals Burger Co. takes all the best elements of burger culture from home and abroad and sprinkles it with a special spice that only a blend of Northern Beaches and Eastern Suburbs friends could contrive. Brookvale is a new destination for Sydney’s burger lovers, no matter which side of the bridge you call home.
