There are very few things in the world that can surpass the satisfaction one gets when you stumble upon a really good bakery. From trying a Magnolia Bakery Cupcake in New York, to getting my first Sprinkles Cupcake from their cupcake ATM, it’s these little gems that can excite a true cake lover like myself.
Fortunately, these days Sydney has no lack of places to find gorgeous cakes and cupcakes, and one of those places is Vanoir, which just opened its first shop at Glenmore Road in Paddington Sydney on November 15th 2017.
The concept of Vanoir was conceived by two best friends Julian and Orlando. Julian is the art director and entrepreneur, while Orlando weaves his magic into the sweet creations. Orlando used to be an interior designer, where one of his first jobs was working at his parent’s shop. But he later found that his one true passion was baking. After several trials in the kitchen, he finally found his winning recipe, and the rest was history. In 2014, he founded Black Velvet, another award winning cake and cupcake shop with an amazing array of flavours and design.
Finally in 2017, Julian and Orlando decided to pool their talents, and Vanoir Cupcakes was founded. Vanoir (which means “beautiful black vanilla” or “luxury edible art”) differentiates itself from run-of-the-mill cake shops with a studio location in Paddington. The glamorous location befits the name and philosophy of the shop, which is really to use the best ingredients available and turn the ordinary cupcake into a work of art.
For their opening night, Orlando showcased his Grace Blossom Lychee Cupcakes. The lychee fruit has a sweet, fragrant, and lightly citrus flavour. It is one of my personal favourite cupcake flavours as well, so you can imagine my excitement when I discovered the attractive little baby cupcakes sitting on the tray! Orlando who was there in person, fervently encouraging his guests to try the lychee cupcakes, but to be honest, they literally sell themselves! The base cake is light and fluffy, and baked to perfection, hidden inside a dark brown casing. The highlight though has to be their signature French butter cream frosting in an enticing pink colour with silver cachous sprinkled on top. It may be a baby cupcake, but it has a fantastic impact from the dark brown, pink and silver colour contrast, that was practically screaming “eat me1 eat me!”. The flavours of the buttercream and cake work so well together; like a marriage made in cake heaven.
Besides the signature cupcakes, Vanoir also had their Confiseur Vacarons on display, which are Macarons made Vanoir-style! The Vacarons were all filled with interesting flavours, and had a crispy outside and a chewy inside that was not too sweet. For me though, nothing beat the sweet and salty flavours of the classic salted caramel. With the beautiful deep yellow colour, it had to be my favourite Vacaron flavour.
One unique item that was also on display was Vanoir’s Cake Pop Mermaids. The base is made with a moist delicious cake, shaped into a ball and coated with a white chocolate ganache. The hardened chocolate cake ball is then dusted with gold and silver sprinkles to add some magic. A stick is placed in the middle, which is then adorned with a handmade chocolate mermaid tail in blue or pink and a gold shell. It was visually stunning; the kind of stuff baked fantasies are made of.
For that special touch, Vanoir also offers customisation of their cakes and cupcakes. With all that focus on service, quality and taste, its no wonder that Vanoir was awarded Best of Sydney 2017 – Best Cupcakery & Cake Studio. As Marie Antoinette once said :”Let them eat cake”, to which I would concur and say “Yay” to that !
