In Short: Heirloom Espresso Mosman is a cosy, contemporary cafe with a local feel that offers great Pablo & Rusty’s brew paired with an eclectic menu.
Those of us who’ve been lucky enough to experience Sydney’s posh paradise of Mosman, know it for its upscale ‘high-street’ and beachy, Rodeo Drive atmosphere. Mosman has another side though, a side the locals know and love, that exists just steps from the main drag. Nestled in the charming village of shops on Avenue Rd is Heirloom Espresso, a cosy and contemporary café that is bringing urban café chic to Mosman’s quaint enclave.
It’s a stifling, steamy Sydney summer brunch time and we’re at Heirloom Espresso looking for a hook up with their best Pablo & Rusty’s brew. Marcel, the owner and magician barista, is one of the nicest café craftsman you’ll ever meet, and he has a cappuccino and a smile at the table as we settle into the bright and funky window-lined space. The “cap” has a complexity that sparks the palate to life with bold notes of dark chocolate, malt, and a decidedly interesting licoricey finish.
Like any good food blogger who wants to try it all, and is always on the hunt for a stunning foodie photo, we opt for the HL Board – a sampling platter that features some of the best in-house prepared specialties by Heirloom Espresso. With a bounty that includes Jamon Serrano (dry cured ham), cured salmon, pickles, tahini yoghurt dip, soft boiled egg, avocado, cheese, beetroot, and toast, there’s so much to taste and combine! One of the highlights for me was the amazing Jamon Serrano with its salty, aged tang and satisfying chewiness.
Like the cappuccino, the flat white accentuates the complex Pablo & Rusty’s Porter St blend but with a smooth, milky finish that makes this a treat on the palate.
From the continental melange of the HL Board to the deliciously, down-to-earth Pulled Pork Burger, this bundle of bun-bound, smoky pulled pork, chipotle slaw, swiss cheese, and tomato relish teases the tongue with a deft spiciness. The fresh crunch of the slaw and the tender juiciness of the pork play off each other and make this a handful of yum.
Somehow the thermometer has edged even higher during our “brunchy” break, so we order up a frosty iced coffee. Leaning on the same Pablo & Rusty’s brilliance, Marcel delivers a refreshing bottle of brew that is sure to take that the edge off those sweltering rays.
Heirloom Espresso beckons locals, and savvy Mosman visitors, with coffee and tastes that are a cut above. Couple those with the genuine, welcoming smile of its owner Marcel, and you’ll find yourself gladly procrastinating your day away.
