In Short: Drip Coffee Traders is a real gem in the Collaroy Plateau that epitomises the Northern Beaches way of life; cool and casual. Local coffee roasters, Barrel One, ensure this is the place for a guaranteed great coffee, no matter which way you like it.
Bored at home on a Sunday and re-watched all the good stuff on Netflix for the tenth time? Resist that urge to rummage through the dusty DVD collection in the closet and take up the new foodie pastime I like to call…”Local Latte Lotto”. Sure, we all know the best spots in the city for a hipster-certified café experience, but the epic Aussie coffee culture has seen some seriously talented baristas migrating to the suburbs and bringing their craft to a local café near you. The challenge of Local Latte Lotto is to uncover those neighbourhood café gems that deliver all the quality of the best CBD cafes, but do it with a local focus and a lot less wank. Collaroy’s Drip Coffee Traders is one of those gems.
Don’t get me wrong, wank is a crucial ingredient in a lot of cool cafés out there, I am all for a good dose with my twice-baked, thrice-fermented, once pulled pork on sourdough with free range snuffled truffle oil, but occasionally it’s also nice to drop all the pretence and just chill with a great cup of coffee and some delicious food in a relaxed, locally loved café.
Stepping into the fresh, bright, tiled canvas of Drip Coffee Traders, we nestle into a cosy snug and order up a few warming cups on this sunny, but still chilly late winter’s afternoon. Extracted from local Barrel One Coffee Roasters beans, the cappuccino is a smooth, light blend with chocolatey, nutty notes.
The other hand warmer of a cup is a delightful, subtly spiced Sticky Chai whose creaminess cradles the delicate tea leaves and make this a perfect companion to the brekkie to come.
Speaking of breakfast, the first spoonful is that of a deliciously bright and fresh Acai bowl, which fellow Coco & Viner Sonia is addicted to lately! Floating atop a pool of rich, smooth, and sublimely sweet acai, bananas are joined by strawberries and granola that all combine in texture and taste for a mouthful that’s crunchy, creamy, cool, and classically acai.
Shifting gears to something a little more traditional, Drip Coffee Trader’s Bacon & Egg roll showcases all that’s great about this Aussie café staple, and provides a perfect pop with aioli sauce atop a heap of smoky, charred bacon crowned by a superbly gooey egg. This B&E is worth the drive to Collaroy alone.
So, did we win this round of Local Latte Lotto? You bet we did! Drip Coffee Traders is another example of why Australian café culture is a cut above all others and how superb food and coffee craftsmanship can be found in almost every neighbourhood. Well done Drip Coffee Traders team!
