In Short: We came to St. Edmonds cafe on a tip to find the best French Toast in Prahran and we found it in the Cornflake Crumbed French Toast. Back that up with brilliant coffee and a comfy backstreet vibe, and St. Edmonds is an essential element in the Prahran caféscape.
As a recently settled Melbournian, I still have to pinch myself when I think how lucky I am to live in a city with a street vibe that has few rivals. Take another step off the high street and that backstreet vibe of designer grit, graffiti gallery, and hipster hideout, ratchets up to a whole other level.
The café culture treasures to be found in the laneways of Melbourne’s shabby chic suburb of Prahran don’t come much better than the eclectic St Edmonds. A café space that had its beginnings as garage and now sees a steady stream of the coffee crowd in-the-know.
We’re here on the tip off that St. Edmonds does an incarnation of French toast that has Instagrammers reaching for their phones. The Cornflake Crumbed French Toast comes together around a ciabatta that mingles with lemon curd in a divine dance of subtle sweetness and tart temptation. Dazzled with meringue, fresh berries, and wait for it… baked rhubarb… ohhh yasss.
There’s no heavy, sponge-like, “roll me out the door in a food coma” fears here! It’s a decadent, yet delicate derivation of a breakfast favourite. The crunch of the Cornflake crumb that yields to the softly satisfying ciabatta sticks are the ideal contrast to the bite of the curd, snap of the meringue, and acidity of the berries. It’s easily the best French Toast in Prahran that we’ve found in our foodie foraging to date!
Sips between bites of the French Toast come in the silky, smooth serenity that is the St. Edmonds brew. This cup’s a latte and its bold, yet very drinkable flavours are the perfect accompaniment to the sweet vibes of the aforementioned frenchy fave.
Diving deeper into the St. Edmonds café crowd pleasing menu, the Pea Fritters flutter to our table crowned with perfectly poached eggs and enough vibrant greens to take the sting from the guilt of the naughty French Toast treat.
Further down the healthy rabbit hole we head with the Splice Bowl. A parade of impeccably paired particulars that include vanilla coconut yoghurt, granola, pineapple, lemon balm, lychee, passionfruit, berries, kiwifruit, make this bowl all you’d need to splice into main line of an energetic day ahead.
We came to St. Edmonds for the best French Toast in Prahran and stayed for amazing coffee, a healthy harvest of café favourites, and a local backstreet café vibe befitting of the best of Melbourne curated café culture.
